One Glass Of Wine A Day Linked To Increased Risk Of Breast Cancer

If you enjoy a glass of wine with dinner each night – you probably don’t feel too guilty. After all wine has been tied to a healthier heart thanks to antioxidants found in certain wines. But a new study has linked just one small glass of wine a day to a 5% increased risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women and 9% in post.

That’s according to the report by the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund who looked at around 100 previous studies of 12 million women.

So how much wine are we talking? Researchers say 10 grams of alcohol a day – or about the amount in a small glass of wine or 8 oz beer. While 5% increased risk seems small, CNN reports the lead author was surprised by the small amount of wine needed to increase the risk at all as other studies have shown 2 glasses was needed.

The new report also looked at over all lifestyle and breast cancer. The upside is that getting physical – not that kind – but running and cycling can decrease breast cancer risk by 17% in premenopausal women and 10% in post.
