Maryland’s Famous Wild, Swimming Horses

One birthday a few years ago, my husband and I went to Assateague to find a couple of wild ponies.  We did.  The pony swim is on my bucket list!  Every year in July, thousands go to Chincoteague VA to welcome the ponies from Maryland.  This very old tradition, starts early this morning when the horses swim from Assateague to Chincoteague. Some believe the ponies came from an ancient Spanish shipwreak   The money raised by the wild horse auction go to the local Chinoteague Fire Department.  There is a carnival and parade on the island too.  The event starts today and runs thru Saturday.  For more info:
