Last night, Monday, July 16, No Doubt premiered their “Settle Down” video as part of an E! special. The track and accompanying video mark their return after nearly 10 years. Gwen Stefani has been on her solo jam, and becoming a mom and an international spokesperson for L’Oreal (whose Infallible lip gloss makes a short cameo in the video) and the head of a major fashion empire…basically doing any- and everything she wants.
But now the band are back together and “Settle Down” wants to ease the fans back into No Doubt. Director Sophie Mueller features her usual palette of bright colors against a dark backdrop, putting all the band members in the cabins of their own semi-trucks to start. Bassist Tony Kanal gets an Indian theme (and brandishes one of their signature oranges for Orange County, the band’s point of origin), drummer Adrian Young is ska-ed out, and guitarist Tom Dumont has a real American feel. Stefani is in a glam truck with some Harajuku girls stashed in the back.
This is interspersed with shots of a frustrated Stefani dancing out her woes in a black tank top, grinding her teeth in frustration.
When the crew are finally brought together, the entire vibe changes. There are no worries, no problems, and loads of flashing lights. From there Mueller puts each band member on top of their semi to perform. She brings them together on the ground where a combination live performance/dance party takes place.
Things get a little trippy at the end. Mueller uses strobe lights, black out edits and stuttered shots to express a disconnect, or exhaustion, from Stefani’s point of view. It will be interesting to see where this leads us in the continuing story of No Doubt.
Their full album, Push And Shove, will hit stores on September 25th.
