Between his solo career, The Babys and Bad English, John Waite has a large catalog of hits, and he’s often on tour performing them, along with some new songs. Waite recently stopped by Tampa’s Q105 to hang out on the Mason Dixon show, where he talked about his past and present, including his collaboration with Kyle Cook of Matchbox Twenty.

Waite currently lives in Santa Monica, California, but says he’s spending most of his time on the road. “You know at some point you’d think you’d just want to stay at home, but the urge to make music is always there. Making new music every few years keeps it fresh.”

His latest album, Rough and Tumble, features a collaboration with Matchbox Twenty’s Kyle Cook, “If You Ever Get Lonely.” “The song wrote itself,” Waite says. “It just came out one day after rehearsal.”

The singer explained a mutual friend knows the guys from Matchbox Twenty. “He said, ‘You’ve got to work with Kyle.’ Kyle lives in Nashville and I was living there at the time. We met up, and immediately wrote a song together, next thing I knew we were writing more songs. Then, we’re in the studio making a record. Just a great experience. He actually did the American tour with us. Our guitar player jumped ship, and he stepped in, and did the entire american tour and then when we needed someone for the european tour, he stepped in for that as well! We did my home town of lancaster with kyle on guitar, it was one of the best gigs we ever played!”
