With Coldplay’s song “See You Soon,” the lyrics are less dysphoric than the general tone of the song, although there is some bit of warning (and sad paranoia) throughout the song:

So they came for you/ they come snappin’ at your heels/but/don’t break your back if you ever say this/but don’t answer that/in a bulletproof vest,/with the windows all closed/I’ll be doin’ my best

9. “The Scientist”

Everytime I hear this lovelorn Coldplay song, I am always two to five seconds away from bursting into tears, especially with lyrics like this about most painful parts of love lost:

Nobody said it was easy/It’s such a shame for us to part/Nobody said it was easy/No one ever said it would be this hard

8. “Warning Sign”

“Warning Sign” has a similar theme to “The Scientist,” except in “Warning Sign” Chris Martin is lamenting his sadness over not seeing that he passed over a good thing because he didn’t heed the signs.

A warning sign/You came back to haunt me and I realized/That you were an island and I passed you by/When you were an island to discover

7. “Viva La Vida”

Out of all of Coldplay’s songs, “Viva La Vida” is the most different in terms of storytelling, but the theme is the same: once upon a time, I had something and I lost it.

In “Viva La Vida,” that something is power.

I used to rule the world/Seas would rise when I gave the word/Now in the morning I sleep alone/Sweep the streets I used to own

6. “Clocks”

One of the fabulous things about the lyrics to “Clocks” is how they transcend those existential moments in life, while simultaneously summing them all up:

Lights go out and I can’t be saved/Tides that I tried to swim against/You’ve put me down upon my knees/Oh I beg, I beg and please, singin’/Come out of things unsaid/Shoot, an apple off my head/And the/Trouble that cant be named/The tiger’s waiting to be tamed singin’/You are

5. “Violet Hill”

The sadness in this song needs to no other explanation beyond the lyric sadly repeated throughout the song: If you love me/Won’t you let me know?

4. “In My Place”

Chris Martin’s loneliness is heartrendingly poignant in “In My Place,” especially with lyrics like:

I was scared, I was scared/Tired and under prepared/But I’ll wait for it/If you go, if you go/Leave me down here on my own/then I’ll wait for you

3. “The Hardest Part”

Sometimes things begin and they don’t seem to have a defined ending–or even a middle. “The Hardest Part” is seemingly about waiting for the “bell to ring” or to understand what is going on in a situation, romantic or otherwise:

And the hardest part/Was letting go not taking part/Was the hardest part/And the strangest thing/was waiting for that bell to ring/It was the strangest start

2. “Fix You”

Everyone goes through moments in their lives when they don’t want to deal with the problem anymore; they just want someone to come in and fix them.

Coldplay tapped into this and are offering to fix everything. Which is really the saddest part because no one else can ever “fix” your problems.

When you try your best but you don’t succeed/When you get/what you want but not what you need/When you feel so tired but you can’t sleep/Stuck in reverse/And the tears come streaming down your face/When you lose something you can’t replace/hen you love someone but it goes to waste/Could it be worse?

1. “Trouble”

The worst kind of melancholy is the kind brought on you by someone else who traps you in their web of deceit and, sometimes, even sucks you into it making you the troublemaker:

Oh ,no I see/A spider web and it’s me in the middle/So I twist and turn/Here am I in my little bubble/Singing, I never meant to cause you trouble
