“My wife and I are celebrating our 10th anniversary soon. I want to get her something special, but the economy has destroyed my bank account. What can I do to let her know how I feel without taking us broke?”
Penny Says: Let me commend you ahead of time for remembering your anniversary, gentle reader. You are truly leagues ahead of some of your companions, I am sure.
Traditionally, a tenth anniversary is celebrated with tin or aluminum. I am guessing your wife would not see the romance in buying her a basket full of canned beans and a tin of breath mints, so I am happy to help you discover other, more constructive ideas.
One of the best ways to touch a woman heart is to get her something that took time and effort to create. Consider her favorite colors, flowers, inside jokes you share, memories you treasure and build those sentimental ideas into your gift. Maybe it is as simple as recreating your favorite meal and playing the song you danced to as your first dance during dinner. Perhaps you could rent the movie you saw on your first date and enjoy- or mock- it together!
Also, don’t forget that retailers feel your pain. They need you to spend your money as much as you need to save it! Now is a great time to find deals on local restaurants by utilizing your resources. Many local businesses participate in half-off promotions, where you can purchase half priced gift certificates for restaurants, attractions, spas, and theaters in your area. Who knows, her favorite place might just participate!
Whatever you do, the more you thought you put into the gift to make it more “you,” the more she will remember why she ever said yes in the first place. Because you are a thoughtful and caring man who remembers anniversaries!
