After an investigation by the Los Angeles Times, Arnold Schwarzenegger was forced to speak out about the reasons why wife Maria Shriver left him:

Arnold fathered a child with a member of their household staff 10 years ago, but only recently told Maria about it.

He released a statement last night, saying, “After leaving the governor’s office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago. I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry. I ask that the media respect my wife and children through this extremely difficult time. While I deserve your attention and criticism, my family does not. “

Funny that Arnold asks that we all have respect for his wife that he apparently didn’t have.

Here’s what we know about the staffer, though her name has not been released: She worked for the family for twenty years. She retired in January, the same time Arnold left the California governor’s office. Initially, the woman told the Times that the father of her baby was her ex-husband. Arnold supposedly supported the child from birth. The Schwarzenegger kids essentially grew up with the staff member’s child, obviously not knowing the child was their step-sibling.

I imagine more and more details will be coming out over the next few days. Some comments on Gawker.com had interesting perspectives:

“I feel sorry for the kid, whose very being is the cause for apologies, all around. Everyone lied about who his/her father was.”

“Ten years and he said nothing. Can you imagine how this will affect his children?”

“It’s not the affair, it’s the years of deceit. Maria probably feels like the past 10 years of her marriage were a lie. I truly feel bad for her, their kids and the other child, who I’m sure has suffered irreversible damages. “
