Our friends in LA scored an exclusive story from the premiere episode of NBC’s The Voice. Check out their great coverage below and get a sneak peak of tonight’s premiere episode.
Well, after months of waiting, it’s finally premiering today at 9pm PT!
I was lucky enough to sit in on a taping of the show and of course I’m spilling all the behind-the-scenes gossip with you guys!
What did [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Christina Aguilera[/lastfm] wear? Which coach has a potty mouth? And who is quickly becoming the crowd favorite?
I’ve got all those answers and more for you!
Once I finished things up on the morning show, I headed downtown to LA Center Studios.
In classic SoCal fashion, there was a ton of traffic and NO parking!
After squeezing my car into the tiniest spot EVER, I ran up Bixel Street in my extremely uncomfortable boots. Luckily, I made it just in time, only a little worse for wear.
For as frazzled as I was, Carson and the coaching panel couldn’t be more at ease. The whole crew looked comfortable in their new surroundings with no signs of pre-show jitters.
Something that immediately struck me was how intimate the whole experience is. Even from the very top rows, you couldn’t be more than 30 feet away from the stage.
The chic pop star arrived on stage in a cute little black dress and sky-high red stilettos. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Cee Lo Green[/lastfm] clearly got the fashion memo, coordinating with red-rimmed glasses. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Maroon 5[/lastfm] frontman [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Adam Levine[/lastfm] and country crooner [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Blake Shelton[/lastfm] kept things casual in jeans and button up shirts.
Going into the taping, I knew the least about Blake Shelton, but in my opinion, he’s likely to be the standout judge of the show.
Listening to him talk, you can’t help but laugh. He cracked jokes with his fellow coaches and was constantly engaging with the audience.
Christina is clearly the queen bee in this boys’ club and the crowd can’t get enough of her. She’s able to get her point across without being mean to the vulnerable performers.
Cee Lo kept things cool, flirting with all the pretty girls, but watch out for Adam Levine! He’s the coach most likely to give a contestant his uncensored opinion, but I’m sure they’ll edit out the comments that got a little too raunchy!
Something that sets The Voice apart from other singing competitions is the blind auditions. This means the coaches will not be able to see the contestants and only be able to judge them based on the sound of their voice.
The four coaches sit in these high-tech chairs. If they like the voice they’re hearing, they push a red button placed in front of them. This spins their chair around so they can see the singer.Vodpod videos no longer available.
By pressing the red button, this signifies that the coach wants to invite that particular contestant to join their team of 8 singers.
On The Voice, the coaches act more like mentors, offering up their own resources and contacts to their team in hopes of honing their talent and winning over the voting audience.
It’s one thing to explain to you what blind auditions mean, but it’s absolutely fascinating to watch it happen in person.
When a contender steps out onto the stage, the coaches have no idea who they are or what their backstory is.Vodpod videos no longer available.
Because the coaches are relying on their sense of hearing alone, audience members got to see their raw emotions unfold as they listened intently to each performance.
Can you imagine the look of shock on their faces when they realized the woman they thought they were rocking out to actually turned out to be a man?
On this particular day of taping, we only heard the best of the best perform. Sure, there was Barefoot Guy and Over-The-Top Rocker, but they all had serious talent to back up their strange gimmicks.
Unlike other singing competitions, the singers are backed up by a full band during the audition process. This definitely put the audience and the judges in a dancing mood.Vodpod videos no longer available.
But the blind auditions are also sort of a double-edged sword. It doesn’t really matter if you’re putting on a world-class performance because the coaches can’t actually see you. This means you have to be on point vocally 100% of the time.
Having an audience present also added an interesting element to the auditions. The performers either fed off the crowd’s energy or felt defeated by the lack of interest.
The most exciting moments happened when more than 1 coach pressed their button. In these cases, the tables get turned and the singer gets to choose which team they want to be on.
Even the producers couldn’t contain their own enthusiasm when a contestant picked their mentor. Most people were rooting for Christina’s team, but Blake Shelton also got lots of shouts from the audience as the overwhelmed performers tried to make a quick decision.
It’s clear that we’re in for an amazing season on The Voice. There are some incredible vocalists lined up and the experienced coaching panel seems to be a great fit.
While we wait for the big premiere tonight, here’s a 12-minute clip featuring all of the fabulous coaches and a sneak peek at the set!Vodpod videos no longer available.
