Nite Lite Photo Of The Weekend~

Roland Tower

The friends of the Roland Water Tower are working to preserve and rehab this grand historic Roland Park icon. The monumental Italianate octagonal water tower built in 1904…

…has served as a local landmark throughout most of the community’s history. Abundant spring water was pumped 70 feet high into the tower and distributed under pressure through a large main to every community residence. The tower stored water until 1930, when the City switched the community to the reservoir system. Situated on one of Baltimore City’s highest points, it commands a breathtaking view of the surrounding area. In recent years, the tower has deteriorated severely — to such an extent that it was fenced off in July 2009 to prevent passersby getting too close to it. The tower is one of only two such water towers in Baltimore, the other being the slightly larger West Arlington Water Tower.  All this week The Nite Lite Photo of the Day has featured scenes from Baltimore’s Roland Park neighborhood.
